I ran into an issue today while attempting to take an instant backup of a database. Plesk phpMyAdmin export returned a 500 server error.

“File not found”
“can’t find the file at https://your-domain:8443/domains/databases/phpMyAdmin/export.php”

As it turned out the memory_limit for php was set too low by default for a large export.

You can fix the issue via SSH by:

#move to the plesk admin config directory:
cd /user/local/psa/admin/conf/

#edit the php.ini file:
vi php.ini

#Once in vim increase the memory limit. I set mine to 256MB but you
#could safely set it to 512MB (press "i" to edit the file) :
memory_limit = 256MB

#Press Esc then ":wq" to save the file and exit vim

#restart plesk:
/etc/init.d/psa restart

You should be good to go. Give the export another try.

In the spirit of announcing our new portable photo studio we’ve put together a few good reasons why you shouldn’t starve your local photographer.

Poor photography can be a huge turn off

Any material you put out as a company effects your brand image. You wouldn’t allow a salesman to pursue a strong lead if he routinely dressed sloppy and wasn’t well groomed. Along those same lines you wouldn’t allow the grass outside your office to grow to the height of a small child. Why? Because that salesman and the condition of your office leaves a lasting impression on your clients. Your client is reading your every move for valuable insight as to how you run your business. You want them to leave confident in your abilities, not thinking you should hire a groundskeeper and institute a companywide policy requiring showers for your employees.

Similar to the office and salesman we imagined moments ago; your website may also be one of the first experiences someone will have with your organization. What impression would you like to leave when they walk in your virtual doors? A well groomed website accented with relevant and creative photography says “we pay attention to details”. This extra effort can set you apart from the crowd.

Photography Makes A Great Tool

Quality aside, photos can do a lot for your brand. Great photography can set the mood, establish trust, add color, or tell a story. The best part is that for the most part they do it almost completely subconsciously. What this means for you is that your audience is getting your message without ever having to read a word. In a fast paced environment this can make or break whether someone will read on or pass you by.

Photography can direct your viewrs eyes

When placed correctly photos can draw attention to or from other elements on a page. Generally speaking viewers eyes will gravitate towards faces first as this is something natural to us. To take this a step further, if the subject of our photograph is looking towards your content viewers are prone to follow.

A lot of companies just don’t know what questions to ask their web designer before hiring them. working as a web professional for many years, I have seen and heard my fair share of horror stories. I’ve decided to put together a comprehensive list of questions you should ask your designer along with why its important.

What industry sites and blogs do you read regularly?

This question is important to determine if your designer keeps up with the latest trends and technologies available to them

Do you prefer to work alone or on a team?

This question is important depending on the project at hand. if you have a project that requires a team of designers/developers its probably best you choose a designer/developer that has experience working with others

How comfortable are you with writing HTML entirely by hand? (+exercise)

Many designers will boast being an expert with HTML but rely heavily on programs that complete their HTML for them. For best results your designer should be comfortable writing an HTML document from top to bottom.

What is the w3c?

The w3c is the governing body of the internet. They are pushing for standards compliant development. your designer/developer should have a general idea of who they are.

Can you write table-less XHTML? Do you validate your code?

This question will help weed out the old school table junkies and help you find a designer/developer that uses XHTML elements for what they’re actually intended for. Tables are meant to store data, not for use as a layout solution.

What are a few of your favorite development tools and why?

This question will help you judge their competence, and learn whether they use the tools that have become the industry standard. steer clear of those that use frontpage, or publisher.

What skills and technologies are you the most interested in improving upon or learning

Programing languages are constantly evolving. You want a designer/developer that has the drive to keep up to date. This question will give you insite into the motivation behind your designer/developer.

Show me your portfolio!

A portfolio says a lot about a designer/developer. Can they show you a list of completed projects with clean code that validate with the w3c?

What sized websites have you worked on in the past?

Again, if you’re looking to hire a designer/developer you want to find one with the experience to tackle your project.

Show me your code!

Code can say a lot about the work habits of your designer/developer. Clean code is often a sign of a meticulous and confident work, so check their past completed projects. Anyone can clean up code for an interview so its best you examine their past work.

What are a few sites you admire and why?

this question though not terribly important will help you see if your designer/developer can spot talent. Most qualified professionals will have some favorites.

How about those Acronyms!

Its good to know whoever you choose to trust with your project has a thorough understanding of his profession. If they can’t tell you what HTTP, HTML, and CSS mean at the very least they probably aren’t your best choice.

What web browser do you use?

The right answer to this question would be all of them. You want your project to work across all major browsers. clearly they will have their favorite they use for browsing, but you want to know they do cross browser testing. Give them extra points if they use plug-ins to help them, I personally find the web developer toolbar for firefox, firebug, and Search Status SEO tools to be invaluable.

What are a few personal web projects you’ve got going on?

Most designers/developers have more than a few personal projects they work on in their spare time. This question will help you gauge the passion of your prospect and differentiate the clock-punchers from the passionate designers/developers.
